Debate: The Biggest Club in Ligue 1

By: Thomas | Comments 8 Comments

This is a question without a clear answer and one which causes fraught arguments among Ligue 1 fans worldwide, so we at the Ligue 1 Offside thought we’d start a discussion. There are several answers that frequently come up, along with a few unusual options. I’ll briefly list them here… AS Saint-Etienne: Sainte have a very [...]

Congrats to last week’s winner Fahid Ben Khalfallah, who won for his goal against Rennes. There were plenty of goals to choose from this weekend, with 30 scored (10 of them in the OL-OM match). Abdoul Razak Boukari (Lens), 85th minute, against Teddy Richert.

One of the most exciting weekends in memory culminates with “The Match of the Century” (That last part of the title is a joke, in case you were worried) Le Mans UC 72 0 – 1 AJ Auxerre

AJA pushed into the top three, at least temporarily, as they eked out a win against Paolo [...]

By: Sarah | Comments 1 Comment

Europa League While Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille have already been grabbing the headline this week with their performances in the Champion’s League, the attention now turns to Lille and Toulouse for their games in the Europa League.  I’ll be honest, given the Ligue 1 performances earlier this week, expectations [...]

OM-PSG Preview (Part Deux)

UPDATE: New information regarding the lineup has been tossed around in the press-- see below!
The rest of the world may be focusing on the World Cup Playoffs and the "hand of Henry" (and the impending re-play drama) but let's not forget the biggest game in the Ligue 1 is happening this tomorrow (Friday, 11/20)!  While everyone else is preparing for their week 14 game this weekend, we will be hoping to get our 10th game finally under our belt.  Though, don't feel too bad for the Classico being slightly overshadowed-- after all the first attempt to play offered us lots of gossip, speculation and controversy after the first game was called off by the LFP a mere few hours before kick-off time.  After a week of accusations and temper tantrums (and no, I'm not referring to Hatem's tantrum yet), both teams finally agreed up on the Friday after the play-offs.
And, now on to the new developments in Marseille since the last preview...

Laurent Blanc, The Next Sir Alex?

There have been reports that Blanc is the United's #1 in terms of replacing Sir Alex when he retires (which health permitting might be in a season or two). I can see why Blanc would be an excellent choice for United, and I know that if indeed Sir Ferguson does ...

Chantome
In this friendly further proof was given of what many of us already knew, that Clement Chantome is a quality player. Hopefully this stellar performance will convince Kombouare to start him in the Ligue. Anyway, this was a great opportunity to gain momentum against quite a good side, one that perennially features in Europe from the Portugese Liga Sagres. Let's hope that we can turn a positive performance like this into further improvement in Ligue 1. The rest of the goals from the match are below the jump.

Gignac is alright.

In the last few days, there has been talk about Andre-Pierre Gignac being injured.

This doesn't seem to be the case. He is expected to be the lone striker for France today in their game against Ireland.

Not as much a post as a 'getting the facts straight' story.

I've decided that having Gourcuff, Carrasso and Diarra is enough to make me support France in the World Cup (especially considering Sweden's exit...)

PSG Fans Boycotting Trip to OM

The controversy with this fixture just won't go away!  First there was the usual Classico build-up (including some cool NIKE videos), then the swine flu media explosion, fan mayhem, followed up by some temperamental club politics and then the French government decided to have their say...and now we might have a full-on boycott on our hands!
As most of you know, after the original Classico game last month, fans on both sides were involved in some intense riots in Marseille.  Both the clubs and politicians want to avoid a similar scenario breaking out again-- unfortunately, they are doing so at the expense of PSG fans.  The following measures have been taken to reduce the risk of conflict:

Only 1,000 tickets have been allocated to PSG fans
A special train has been charted by PSG to take fans from Paris to Marseille
