Marseille to meet Bordeaux in Coupe de la Ligue Final

By: Thomas | Comments 2 Comments

Earlier this evening, while the football world’s attention was focused on some abysmal goalkeeping and refereeing in Porto and Munich respectively, a brilliant semifinal was being played out in southern Bretagne. It was another “father versus son” battle as Cristian Gourcuff’s Lorient bravely took on a heavily favored Bordeaux team featuring Yoann Gourcuff.

Review: Coupe de France Round of 64

By: Thomas | Comments No Comments

This weekend has been surprisingly low on upsets for an early Coupe de France round, but that’s probably down to the postponement of eight of the 32 matches due to inclement weather conditions. In fact, the only match in which a Ligue 1 club suffered defeat to lower league opposition was the match between third [...]

The Signing of the Summer

By: Thomas | Comments 3 Comments

Sainté began the season with three strait losses, including one to newly promoted US Boulogne. It seemed as if the ten time champions would have another season fighting relegation. Then the scouts in Argentina reported back. Gonzalo Bergessio of San Lorenzo was available and interested in a move to France. Augusto Fernandez of River [...]

League Cup: Thrills,Spills and 13 Goals in 3 Matches

By: Sam | Comments No Comments

I say it way too often: Nobody cares about la Coupe de la Ligue. Well, results like the ones we witnessed today might be enough for me to reconsider that statement. We were blessed this week with the Round of “32″ of la Coupe de la Ligue aka la Coupe en Carton aka la Coupe dont on se balance complètement aka the League Cup that doesn’t instill quite as much passion and excitement as a walk in the park. Kidding, of course, but still, yeah, this [...]

My Coupe Runneth Over: Sochaux Claim the Cup on Penalties!

By: Sam | Comments 2 Comments

You have to go back over four of my combined lifetimes to see FC Sochaux-Montbéliard win their last Coupe de France. Now, after a hard-fought, not to mention intense final against Marseille, they’ve won it again. A drought that began when they undertook the defense of their 1937 triumph over Strasbourg is now over, after [...]

My Coupe Runneth Over: The Finals Are Set, Sadly There’s No Fourth-Tier Team Involved

By: Sam | Comments No Comments

Who doesn’t love cup magic? There’s always that one amateur team that knocks off a few big boys before bowing out very respectfully in the quarters. Well, France has a history of such happenings, and this year’s Coupe de France was no different. Montceau-les-Mines, the not-so-much-powerhouse that’s having a tough time breathing in France’s fourth [...]
