Boudewijn Zenden is Headed to (Drumroll Please) Marseille!
By: Sam | July 6th, 2007
You there! The reader! Did you expect this? The answer is no. Liverpool and Marseille, who are definitively know each other’s phone number by heart by now, finalized two deals today, that of Dutchman Bolo Zenden, but also Djibril Cissé.
Zenden, who played in the final of the Champions League last May, signed a two-year conract with Marseille, declaring that he was joining a prestigious club that was going to give Lyon a run for their money next season. His wife is French, and as it would have it, Bolo speaks it fluently. He’ll be wearing number 10 this season on the wing. And as we all know, with the number ten comes ten times more responsibility.
The funny part about this signing, is that contrary to normal, OM went about this deal very, very quietly. Maybe the fact that they were bellowing left and right that they were going to get Djibril Cissé back was one of the things, but I never heard of any of this until yesterday, when I read that it was a done deal. Huh!
So yeah, after long months of deliberation, there’s the deliverance. Djibril Cissé will be an OM player next season. And the three other ones after that. Marseille got a bit scared what with the big Torres-is-coming thing that made Liverpool refuse another loan, but finally that was that. His fee is thought to be around 8-9 million euros, but the official amount hasn’t been declared yet.
So basically with the signings they’ve got, Marseille are more than capable of troubling Lyon a whole lot this season. Just look at this lineup:
Carrasso
Beye-Givet-Rodriguez-Taiwo
Cana-Cheyrou
Zenden-Nasri-Ziani
Cissé
With Niang, Zubar, M’Bami and others on the bench, everyone knows they mean business.
Who thinks Lyon should be looking over their shoulder?

The best thing about Bolo is that he’s a true team player. He speaks something like ten languages and was pretty much everyone’s favorite teammate. With that said, he won’t be missed. Luis Garcia may have had just as many bonehead plays, but at least Luisy scored goals. Bolo had a lot trouble finding the net and took a lot of bad shots.

Zenden is a signing that will make OM’s opponents very very happy. I hate to say it, but he’s a waste of space. I was expecting better from Marseille, who did get Zenden for free but still have to pay him very high wages.

Ummh, Inara, you should be shook.
There’s no way Lyon is keeping hexagoal next year.
Zenden speaks french and will adapt pretty easily with
Cissé on the team and a frecnh wife. So I don’t think it’ll be a waste to have an experienced player on the team.Posted from

Of course, Zenden isn’t 25 and playing with PSV anymore, but by Ligue 1 standards go, he’s pretty slick. Besides, there’s always Niang if he disappoints. It’s not like it’s bad for OM.

I can’t believe y’all think Niang will be benched next year. He is arguably in the top 10 of players in the ligue right now. I think he’ll be there. I ythink Zenden will get his chance to shine during the african cup of nations.

Yeah, that’s always the thing with Marseille, all the Africans are always on international. (At least it’s not as bad as St-Étienne :D) But with Ziani and Zenden on the wings it’ll be hard for him to cope, even though, yeah, he is great. Joker de luxe, peut-être? Si Zenden est irrégulier ou bien il a pas le physique c’est largement possible que Niang passe en titulaire, mais c’est à voir…

hey guys why isn’t there marselle offcide?
i think marselles need one more(at least) good defender and one more good midfielder. Where are money from ribery? as i know 8 millions for ziani 8 for cisse and 6 for givet. Also 3 for cheyrou. thats 25. price of ribery? and doesn’t you have any more money to strengthen your squad for champions league? And i also heard cesar is leaving to besiktas for 2.5 millions.
Starting11
carasso
beye Good def givet taiwo
good midfielder( or cheyrou at least)
zenden nasri ziani
cisse niang
This team maybe can battle with lyon
I really wish you good luck
I can’t say that i’m supporter but i really really love om i hope you’ll get in 1/8 of champions league at least and kick lyon’s ass.
Good luck from roma fan!!!Posted from

billi: If any club in the world is willing to pay 2,5 million for Bostjan Cesar, they’re probably run by monkeys. And Marseille has Cana and M’Bami for holding midfielders, and Zubar and Faty for centerbacks to replace Rodriguez and Givet.

I’ve never rated Zenden. I was really worried about the Giuly rumors, as he can do a lot of damage, but Zenden isn’t as scary. I’ve liked OM’s other signings so far though, just not Zenden. His speaking French will facilitate his integration into the team, but he hasn’t looked sharp at all for Liverpool in the past two years. But his experience can only be beneficial.
Madsear, I still think Lyon will win the title next year, just because of the quality and quantity of their manpower. OM’s first team is very good, but the bench isn’t that great, and it will be even more challenging for OM to cope with CAN, the CL, both cups, and the Championnat than for Lyon. But I don’t think the gap will be very big, and the winner won’t be decided by October like it was this past season.
