France in the Champs League: Sneaky Giggs punches Lille right in the solar plexus
By: Sam | February 20th, 2007
Man, it would seem that Lille isn’t a big fan of the 83rd minute. After seeing that fateful minute spell the beginning of the end for their match against Lyon last week, Ryan Giggs broke the deadlock today for Manchester United in the very same one. The video is below.
I’ll get to the two big issues right away: Was Giggs’ goal legal? Was Odemwingie’s disallowed goal legal?
1. Apparently yes. After watching a few videos, it seems it was. Of course, I don’t know whether Lille’s wall asked for time and a whistle, but the relevance of everything everyone is talking about is debatable.
2. I agree with the ref. Odemwingie pushed Vidic, however slight, which gave him the advantage to score the goal. Argh! However, after watching it a few hundred times more, it does seem that Odemwingie was much more focused on the ball then he was his man. Whether Vidic really wanted to stay up is another thing to consider. However, I must say that the ref’s decision was correct. But I’ll probably change my mind in a little bit.
In the eighty-two minutes preceding the goal, Lille put a decent fight to match ManU’s deft creativity. Rooney’s volley missed, Ronaldo’s cracker found glove, and Debuchy played the part of the saviour to stop Ronaldo’s effort from sliding in.
However, the match was overshadowed by, erm, extra-curricular activities, such as the ManU fans having a not-too-pleasant stay in their stands, the Lille fans going apenuts when Giggs popped in the goal, and the Lille players almost boycotting and walking off. Shame, but once again I don’t know whose side to be on.

It’s a pity that Odemwingie scored with foul - his effort was great. Y’know he is educatee of CSKA Moscow youth academy so I usually watch him

I’ve seen the video. First, it was legal, but classless. I expect that from Rooney or Ronaldo, but not Giggs. Second, not sure if it was Saha or Evra, but whomever it was, they appeared offside before the kick was taken, which I believe IS against the rules.

I don’t know, the advantage on that first goal was ever so slight and Odemwingie was certainly focused on the ball at the time. So much so that he scared. I think it should’ve been allowed. Lille hung in there though.
