France in the Champs League

By: Sam | October 30th, 2006

lyon-dinamo-kiev.jpgFrance’s rich history of Champions League play, which includes one ill-gotten win, a runner-up position in the inaugral season and a penalty shoot-out loss in the final to powerhouse Red Star Belgrade continues this week with our three teams hoping to keep up the good work (Lyon), the decent work (Lille) and in some cases, trying to get a freaking win (Bordeaux).

Bordeaux are set to travel to Anfield Road to face Liverpool which will be a good match. The Reds won last time around in wine country by a score of 1-0 on a blasting header from the Ugly Giant. Bordeaux came off a good win last week, and hope to get at least a point from their english counterparts.

Lyon, France’s only decent chance at getting anything done this year, host the fiercely formidable Dinamo Kyiv on Wednesday. They buried the Ukrainians 3-0 while visiting them last game, and I expect nothing less this time around. The boys are on fire this season, having won every game except one. I could look up Dinamo to see how they’re doing domestically, but I’m too lazy and it doesn’t really matter.

Lille pay a visit to the site of this year’s final to face AEK Athens. The good guys spanked the Greeks 3-1 when they came to the hexagon, but it will be by no means an easy game. That being said, AEK hasn’t won a UCL game in the past 21 tries, so don’t bet your life savings on them.

The French clubs in the UEFA Cup this week are Lens, who take on Osasuna on home soil. High-rollers Nancy welcome the Polish prowess of Wisla Cracow. This is the first game for both teams. Paris SG and Auxerre have their bye this week.

GO LILLE! I heard they’ll be without their star striker Gygax.

    keep up the good work!!
