GOAL OF THE WEEK! Round 1

By: Sam | August 11th, 2008

French football is back! Here are five of the twenty-four goals scored in the first round of Ligue 1 this season. Be sure to cast your vote as to which one tops them all.

Bakary Koné (Marseille), 12th minute, against Nicolas Douchez
Precise ball from Ben Arfa to Koné in the box, who cuts back and places a powerful left-footed strike in the very top corner.

Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux), 53rd minute, against Vincent Planté
Run by Wendel and leaves it for the ex-Milanista who unloads a bastard of a right-footer from the arc to mark his first match with his new club.

Karim Benzema (Lyon), 59th minute, against Cédric Carrasso
Good ball from Govou across into the top of the area, Benzema controls well, volleys a left-footed strike into the back of the net from an uninviting angle.

David De Freitas (Nantes), 67th minute, against Rémy Riou
Without Auxerre applying any pressure, the French midfielder stepped up and struck a great long-range effort into the short side.

Bruno Cheyrou (Rennes), 90th+4 minute, against Steve Mandanda
Great collective goal in a wild finish, crisp passing by Rennes on the right flank, Cheyrou finishes it off with a crucial and well-taken header.

And now the fun part…
Who gets your vote?

I’m voting for Baky, just on principle.

It would be really awesome if you guys would post things like this every week, there is nothing better than watching all the great goals without having to look by yourself on YouTube-ish sites, especially if you don’t speak French! :)

My vote goes to De Freitas. It’s true that these long-range goals often go against the run of play, but I adore them nevertheless. Excellent strike!

Now that the season has begun Nicolas, we will be posting more regularly, dont worry. But remember, I have two jobs and school and I spend most of my time with my Real Madrid blog.

Hey, Corey, you have no idea how much I appreciate all of your work here, and I can tell you I’m pretty much astonished by the amount of time all of you (well, most of you) bloggers dedicate to this site! I just wanted you to know what I consider to be a good thing, you always need to know what the public thinks, right? :)

Sam, thanks for your kind words. I must ask though, are you Greek? or just interested in the derby?

    Keep up the good work.
