It’s that damn referee: Two videos that show that the man with the whistle is not always right (believe it or not)
By: Sam | April 4th, 2007In the light of Kaka’s ho-hum penalty and general banter about diving this and argument that, I’m providing videos from two of the most talked-about incidents in Ligue 1 this season.
First video: Lens v. Marseille, 15 October 2006. 80th minute. Marseille leading 1-0. Cana (in blue) gets called for pulling on Hilton (red)’s arm. Fair call?
Second video: Bordeaux v. Lyon, 20 August 2006. Lyon won 2-1. Handballs committed by Lyon in the penalty area: 3. Called: 0.

Wow, I can’t believe that first video… not that the ref got the call wrong, but that Hilton was actually holding Cana’s arm against his body and he basically just fell down. I hate blatant cheating like that…

That first one is the dirtiest trick I’ve seen in a while. Really puts things in perspective.

I hope Hilton was disciplined after the fact for that blatant act of cheating - by his club if not by the league. Of course, I very much doubt he was.

The refereeing in Ligue 1 is embarrassing sometimes. It’s strange because they call so many fouls, and yet the manage to be responsible for so many catastrophic decisions.
PSG anyone?

Hilton was suspended 2 games, if I remember correctly.
