Ligue 1 and Les Bleus
By: Sarah | May 11th, 2010
Unless you live under a rock, you probably know that Raymond Domenech (that studly mustached specimen rocking the PSG gear above)- named his preliminary squad for France’s trip to South Africa this summer. Unlike previous years, Ligue 1 has been represented very well- which is a nice reward given the success the league had this year. Ligue 1 players who made the initial cut are below…

That’s right – 17 of the 30 players that impressed Rayray Domenech are from Ligue 1- I’m not sure how great of an accomplishment that is given his record- but I support any opportunity for the league’s players to impress on the big stage….

Marc Marc Marc
great to know that you made it despite our season.
People can disagree with his call up but RayRay made a good choice (even if Planus is just gonna be a bench warmer)I am a bit disappointed that Yohan Cabaye did not make the list. He had a stellar season.

Domenech can be hated for many things, but he’s always been a supporter of players who ply their trade in L1. He’s never been swayed by the whole “oh I play in a big team in a better foreign league” mentality. Since WC06, the bulk of his players come from L1. Even more interesting is that Lyon and Marseille no longer hold the monopoly on providing the most players – now teams like Nice and Rennes are contributing as well now that they have some higher quality players.

No doubt the quality in Ligue 1 has been incredibly strong the past season.
Players should go on merit.
I’m in total agreement with Inara regarding Domenech leaving big-name Benzema-galactico out because he’s had hasn’t been able to earn enough playing time.
People get on my case all the time for supporting Djibril Cissé but here’s the thing, he’s been scoring a bucket-full of goals, is brimming with confidence, and is healthy.
He’s broken his leg twice playing the sport that he loves, and if he’s healthy for the WC, he should play. I wanted to see him play for Les Bleus in 2006 with Zizou and Ribery and Henry. Unfortunately he broke his leg, again.
He’s apparently healthy now, and I hope that he can score some goals for Les Bleus as a starter or a sub.
Anyone remember Cissé as “first pick” in the Adidas “Impossible is Nothing” WC 2006 ad?:

I am not a huge Cissé fan, but he is certainly quality on the pitch. The fact is that Benzema hasn’t even been able to break into the first team at Real Madrid, and I firmly support his being left out due to that fact. France has enough talent that it can certainly field a team with people starting for their club.
Benzema reminds me a bit of Podolski in some regard, if RayRay hadn’t left him out, he might have more of that sense of entitlement that Podolski has and lose the desire to work for success (like Podolski). I would say Karim’s drop in form woould have to be directly related to his work ethic in training.

I think it is a mistake not choosing Stephane Ruffier to the WC. Ruffier was a top 3 goalkeeper last season and no doubt better than Landreau and Carasso in my opinion
