Ligue 1 Internationals in UEFA World Cup Play-offs

By: Sarah | October 19th, 2009

Unlike England,  Denmark, Switzerland, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Italy and the Netherlands who can finally release a sigh of relief now that the qualification round is over, eight UEFA countries who placed second in their group are still preparing to battle it out to see which four are strong enough to play in South Africa.  So, moving past the controversy, lets see which Ligue 1 players could be called up to fight for their country’s place in the 2010 World Cup….

France: Lloris (Lyon), Mandanda (OM), Carrasso (Bordeaux), Douchez (Rennes), Fanni (Rennes), Boumsong (Lyon), Sissoko (Toulouse), Govou (Lyon), Toulalan (Lyon), Diarra (Bordeaux), Gourcuff (Bordeaux), Ben Arfa (OM), Gomis (Lyon), Gignac (Toulouse), Hoarau (PSG) and Remy (Nice)

Slovenia:  Cesar (Grenoble), Birsa (Auxerre) and Jokic (Sochaux)

Bosnia-Hertzogonia: Pjanic (Lyon) and Spahic (Montpellier)

African qualification isn’t over yet, is it?
Cameroon, algeria, Egypt, Nigeria etc are yet to qualify.

sorry, I should have clarified that this was about the European qualification– though I can see how the reference to Argentina made that unclear. Yes, to my knowledge African qualification is still on-going (I think only Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana have qualified)…though I haven’t followed it very closely since Morocco has barely managed 3 points in 5 games. I will write an update on the African qualification when it is over (as it relates to Ligue 1). I’ve updated my post to clear up the confusion….thanks!

Hoarau is out until January so I guess we can cross him off the list!
