Ligue 2: We’re halfway through
By: Sam | December 10th, 2006
If anyone of you can honestly tell me that you can name a Ligue 2 club without looking below, give yourself a pat on the back.
I hear they’d rather show Arsenal play Chelsea on the tube than Libourne Saint-Seurin battle Stade Brestois. But that just goes to show what they know.
The French equivalent of the Championship, aptly named Ligue 2, got to the halfway pole this weekend, and for what it’s worth, I’ll fill you in real quick. This way, you’ll wow your colleagues by informing them that Renaud Cohade of Strasbourg has scored six goals already this year, conveniently, all penalties.
Relegated last year, Metz and Strasbourg are now first and third in Ligue 2, the former club comfortably ahead of second-place Caen.
The clubs brought up from Championnat National last season, aren’t doing so hot. Libourne Saint-Seurin is the best of the bunch, sitting in thirteenth place. Niort and Tours are doing an adorable job of trying to vacate 19th and 20th (that’s second to- and last place, unlike the Championship which has 24 teams).
The underachieving award goes to Montpellier, with an array of talented players, a good fanbase and a fourteenth place.
In brief: Metz, Caen and Strasbourg are currently in position to trot back into the elite, followed closely by the always-near Dijon, and the outsiders Le Havre, Amiens and Reims.
At the other end of the table, Guinguamp, Tours and Niort are in the red zone.
Not much to say about this league, which has an average attendance of just over 6,000, but I’ll keep you updated on the essentials.

Les Blues should consider adding Renaud Cohade to their roster just for his penalty taking skills.
