Ligue 1 Coming to the Stade de France!
By: Sam | November 23rd, 2007
L’histoire s’apprête à être écrite, sort of. It was announced today by Lille OSC’s official website that on the evening of 1 March 2008, Lille will play host to Olympique Lyonnais… at the Stade de France! That’s right, the mighty SdF which was built for France 98 is celebrating its ten-year anniversary, and to mark the occasion, it will serve as pitch for its first-ever Ligue 1 match.
Curious enough, even though it’s the first league match at the 80,000 seater just north of Paris in the suburb of Saint-Denis, Lille aren’t strangers to its splendor. What with their interim stadium being as big as my backyard, they were forced to select another stadium to play their home Champions League matches in when they first participated in the competition two years ago.
It should be fantastic. In turn, it got me thinking: What if one match per week was played at the Stade de France? You know, the big Sunday match? That would definitely be a big thing. But I’m getting carried away. It’s hard not to when you see that poster though…

The travelling support won’t like that idea. But Paris Saint-Germain could rent the place.:-) I never really understood the economic reasoning behind having a stadium just for the national team and cup final.
