Ligue Dooo
By: Corey | February 11th, 2008Not to many people watch Ligue 2 outside France. And whether you can admit it or not, people dont really watch Ligue 1 much out of France unfortunately. But I think its time we take a look at Ligue 2 and see whats goin on down there.
This reads as such:
Position Team Points Wins Draws Losses Goals For Goals Against Goal Difference
1 Le Havre 47 23 13 8 2 38 18 20
2 Nantes 45 23 13 6 4 35 19 16
3 Troyes 41 23 11 8 4 30 20 10
4 Bastia 38 22 11 6 5 32 19 13
5 Clermont Foot 36 23 8 12 3 33 23 10
6 Montpellier 35 23 9 8 6 26 18 8
7 Grenoble 35 23 9 8 6 29 23 6
8 Angers 35 23 9 8 6 23 20 3
9 Sedan 33 23 8 9 6 28 26 2
10 AC Ajaccio 32 23 8 8 7 25 25 0
11 Reims 28 22 8 4 10 26 35 -9
12 Boulogne-sur-Mer 27 23 7 6 10 26 33 -7
13 Brest 27 23 7 6 10 20 30 -10
14 Guingamp 26 23 6 8 9 22 24 -2
15 Châteauroux 26 23 6 8 9 23 26 -3
16 Amiens 23 23 5 8 10 24 32 -8
17 Niort 22 23 6 4 13 20 27 -7
18 Dijon 22 23 4 10 9 16 32 -16
19 Libourne/Saint-Seurin 19 23 4 7 12 26 39 -13
20 Gueugnon 14 23 2 8 13 22 35 -13
So Le Harve are top of the table which I like because I think they and their academy need to be in the top flight. Nantes likewise, as they power their straight back up. And Troyes is hanging on to third, Bastia not far behind. Id prefer to see the islanders back up, they bring a unique (if not slightly racist) atmosphere to Ligue 1. As for the bottom, Guegnon looks destined to go down, as they are 8 points from safety, while Libourne, Dijon and Niort are all clawing to stay up. Amiens too.
I dont watch any Ligue 2 so I can not comment on the level of play this year, so what do you guys think? Later.

I think the difference between the bottom half of L1 and the top half of L2 isn’t that great, and many clubs are probably interchangeably between the two divisions.

And some interchanging is going to happen at the end of the season, unless they abandon the promotion/relegation model.;-)

I actually love Ligue 2. I can’t wait to see Dijon eventualy rise to Ligue 1. It won’t happen this year but eventually I should think. There is some wonderful talent in the league this year. I personally think young espoir international Karim Ait Fana has a great deal of potential with Montpellier and I have always been a fan of Dijon keeper Barel Mouko (wish he were at Lens). Bastia and Nigeria international keeper Austin Ejide is a very impressive talent and should be in Ligue 1 soon if the EPL doesn’t get him first. I don’t understand how he has been able to play as long as he has in the very racist Corsican atmosphere at Bastia. It will be nice to see Le Harve back in Ligue 1 soon as well.

I agree Jay, Le Harve, Nantes and Montpieller need to rejoin Ligue 1. But what clubs can we shed from Ligue 1? Probably could do without Metz, Sochaux and Strasbourg, but I dont know, its always rough to say who should get demoted. Keep me updated on Ligue 2 talent as well, they are the future Ligue 1 talent if you think about it!

I love dijon not only in my sandwich’s, but as a team. Hopefully they wake up and save their season.
Wake up mustard’s, theres a season to save because going down lower is defenitly gonna delay the new stadium plans…

Heart and soul Montpellier. Though they’re THE underachievers of the league, I love them.

Sam is forgetting Montpellier were almost relegated last season…
It’s strange, but Ligue 2 is full of “legendary” teams…
Reims : Perhaps the first “great” French teams, with Kopa, Fontaine and Hidalgo… They won the league 6 times between 49 and 62, won the Coupe de France twice (50 & 58), won the Latine Cup (pre-European Cup competition between the French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese champions) in 53, and were twice finalists in the European Cup (56 & 59)… They were the creators of “Football Champagne”, and some say their quality is unparalleled in France since.
Nantes : Great club mainly between 73 and 83, when they won the league 4 times (total 8), and finished second 4 times too… No european titles, but they’re famous within France for two periods of “jeu à la Nantaise” : 73-83 under Arribas, Vincent and then Suaudeau, and 92-97 again under Suaudeau. Short “precise” passing was Nantes’ trademark, as well as one of the best youth systems in France (Loko, Karembeu, Makélélé, Landreau, Desailly, Deschamps, Toulalan…).
Le Havre : Never a powerhouse in the French leagues, but they are the oldest French club after all, so that’s legendary enough…
Bastia : Strange corsican club, who never won a Ligue 1 titles, although they were regularly in the top 5 between 1985 and 1995. They have the particularity of having lost the 1977-1978 UEFA Cup final against PSV Eindhoven, and were only 90 minutes away from becoming the first French Club to win a european title before a national title. Bastia’s stadium is also sadly well known for a collapse in 1982 that injured 2,300 and killed 18.
Montpellier : Not very well known for any exploits in the League or in Europe, but well known for the people that have played/worked there. The most famous is president Louis “Loulou” Nicollin. He declared before a game against Barcelona (where the Barcelonan president had denigrated the “weak” Montpellier side) famously “Ils nous prennent pour des jambons!” (They think we’re “hams”!). His explosive character and his build made him one of the best-known presidents in French football. And he’s been president for 30 years now, perhaps a record in French Football… But the players, even without success also brought something legendary to Montpellier : Cantona, Valderrama, Milla, Blanc and Andersson marked a certain idea of “beautiful” and passionate football as Montpellier played.
La Bérichonne Chateauroux : Not exactly a powerhouse, with only 1 season in Ligue 1 in the 120 years since its creation, Chateauroux still has something legendary, since they had a great “Coupe de France” run in 2003 that saw them get to the final. They lost against the PSG, but since the PSG had finished 2nd in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Champion’s League, Chateauroux qualified for the 2004 UEFA Cup. They became thus the first team to play Ligue 2 and a European Competition in the same season. The UEFA Cup was short-lived, however, as their first draw was against FC Brugges, who won 4-0 in Brugges, and 2-1 in Chateauroux.
Gueugnon : Also a “small” club by all standards, the only claim to fame that Gueugnon have is that they became the first club to win the Coupe de la Ligue whilst in Ligue 2, when they beat PSG in the 2000 final (2-0).There, just a quick reminder of the greatness of “sleeping” sides in Ligue 2 (mainly Reims and Nantes).

Furiani’s tragedy was in 1992, a few minutes before the semi final of French Cup against Marseille.
It occulted the C2 final Monaco lost 3 days after against Bayer Leverkusen.
