PSG finally get a move on, sack coach

By: Sam | January 16th, 2007

lacombevire.jpgAlain Cayzac, proud president of Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, is a brave man. Boldly defending head coach Guy Lacombe for their short-lived relationship in the country’s capital, Cayzac remained adamant to PSG’s imminent resurfacing, the club’s will to rid themselves of their current funk, and all those things that presidents do oh so adorably when their clubs are downright sucking.

Guy Lacombe, who lasted exactly two half-seasons at the helm of PSG, has assuredly, certainly, completely, conclusively, convincingly, decisively, definitely, determinately, done with, enduringly, finally, for ever, for good, in conclusion, in fine, inescapably, inexorably, irrevocably, lastly, past regret, permanently, settled, with conviction been sacked as their coach.

After having replaced Laurent Fournier on Boxing Day of last winter in a bizzare white-collar caffuffle with then-president Pierre Blayau, Lacombe came in as a decently respected man, having somewhat mentored some guy named Zidane at Cannes in the early nineties.

Thirty-eight league games later, with a whopping eight wins scattered throughout the previously mentionned figure, Cayzac decided enough was enough, and handed the man with the horrid mustache his walking papers.

Paul Le Guen, who left Glasgow Rangers unceremoniously after a short stint as manager there, has been appointed as Lacombe’s much-needed replacement. Le Guen, who led Lyon to three of its recent France championships and who donned a PSG shirt for the last seven years of his playing career, announced with admirable class that he was glad and proud to accept this position.

Said Le Guen (translated from French): I would first like to say two simple things: The first is that I am happy and proud to become the head coach of PSG, a club for which I played seven years of my career and that I’ve always been close to. The second is that I would like to give my respect to Guy Lacombe, especially my professional respect. I tried to reach him without success. I adress to him my friendship, and I am thinking of him.

“Popol” will start as soon as Tuesday, when Toulouse come into town hot off a huge upset over Lyon at home, in a postponed match from early December.
