Représente ta ligue: The Lyon Sleeps Tonight
By: Sam | September 19th, 2007Yes, I insist on using that headline every time, what of it? You’ve probably heard: Olympique Lyonnais were destroyed by Barcelona, Lionel Messi in particular, in Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League. Total humiliation, as some would have it.
Lyon are now on the bottom of Group E, after being thoroughly dominated by the Catalonians at the Nou Camp. François Clerc scored an own goal midway through the first half when he nudged a dangerous cross from Messi past Vercoutre, surprised. Messi then took full credit for the goal he created ten minutes from the final whistle when capped off a good spell of posession and beat the keeper far post. Then in injury time, who else but Thierry Henry put salt in Lyon’s wounds with the third.
Said Rémy Vercoutre after the match (translated from French): It’s hard to take, the tab is thick. We’re leaving with zero points. That wasn’t what we had set out for. With their technical quality, it was hard to take the ball away from them. We couldn’t figure them out, but we won’t be the last team that they hurt this bad. We weren’t ridiculous, but they were up to the task and kept the ball away from us. We’ll be doing some thinking about it.
And leave it to Jean-Michel Aulas to throw about the adorable optimism (translated from French): We know that if we want to qualify, we’ll have to win at home and tease Stuttgart and Rangers on the road. Tonight, many things brought about satisfaction. At times, we got back in the match and created chances.
Good boy, JMA!
So much for the 5-1 win at Metz last weekend. Does this say something about Ligue 1, or is it just the sum of a bad effort and a formidable opposition?

Bad effort. If Lyon played this way against Metz, we’d probably be lucky to get a draw.

“We couldn’t figure them out, but we won’t be the last team that they hurt this bad.”
As a Barca fan, I love this part of the quote
Still, we might have won this game, but that was Catalonia. Back in Lyon, the results won’t be the same… I still say Lyon qualifies to the Knockout Stages, so good luck!

Lyon played shamefully. They played to defend and counter Barca, but they forgot they also had a game to play!
perrin’s formation was really stupid, he was scared and tried to outclass Barca’s tactical formation… but it’s not sochaux anymore! He doesn’t realize yet, that if he lets the Lyon team play the way they want to, they can beat any team in Europe according to the day…
But against Barca, as soon as the formation was shown, you knew we would lose!
I hope he will learn from his mistake. I want Lyon to beat Barca 3-0 now on the return leg…
