Take that, Milan, even though you don’t care!

By: Sam | December 6th, 2006

milan-aclille.jpgLille went to San Siro looking for a win and nothing else. They got nothing else. They played a great game, scoring via Peter Odemwingie and Kader Keita. They now finish second in their group. Oh, and Milan couldn’t have cared less about that match.

Mathieu Bodmer’s powerful shot was cleared by keeper Kalac right onto the foot of Odemwingie, who made no mistake on seven minutes. And an hour later, after hearing the good news from Belgium, Keita flew down the pitch, exchanging with Bodmer, and coolly put Lille 2-0 ahead. Due to Anderlecht’s drawing 2-2 with then-second place AEK, Lille surpassed the Greek side by a single point to keep their dream, however faint, alive.

In other matches, Bordeaux capped off their late-blooming campaign by flipping PSV over in Eindhoven, 3-1. Goals by Faubert, Dalmat and Darcheville within 37 minutes of the kick-off secured the meaningless win. After scoring exactly 0 goals in the first four games, les Girondins got cracking in the last two, scoring three in each. Good luck in the UEFA Cup late stages.

Lyon, surprisingly, sported an almost full lineup of starters on Wednesday at Gerland to welcome UEFA Cup-bound Steaua. And within two minutes, the visitor’s star Dica silenced the crowd with a sweet volley to put the Romanians in front. Alou Diarra, however, was not to be denied when he clearly headed Kallström’s corner into the Steaua net. OL finishes first, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get a big gun like Barca or Inter in the next round…

Lille showed a lot of heart tonight. It is never easy to win in Milan even when the home team fields its third string. Two out of three to the next round isn’t bad. Lyon has the potential to go deep this year, in my opinion.

I am SO depressed that the footy pirates didn’t show the Lyon game! Although it doesn’t sound like it was all it was cracked up to be, so maybe I didn’t miss much.

Poor Milan — they were practically giving tickets away (selling them for ONE EURO!), and not only could they not fill the place, but even the players weren’t bothered. Sigh.
