The France Offside is not Dead
By: Sam | June 16th, 2007
I’m awful sorry for not posting for over a week, folks, it’s a bit frantic behind my steering wheel these days. Between gearing up for final exams, cheering on Canada at the Gold Cup and having Internet problems, I try to post meaningful stuff as often as I can (well, maybe not entirely as often as I can) but for the next little bit that won’t be very often.
Regardless, I’m here now to fill you in on all those crazy rumours the kids are shouting in the streets. Some official transfers, too!
You’re probably aware that Olympique Lyonnais sees the rest of the Ligue 1 as a Wal-Mart customer sees the five-dollar bin, and this week they continued the trend of plucking the best and the brightest from around the country, this time jacking Mathieu Bodmer and Kader Keita from the going-down Lille. Bundled together, the receipt is said to have read about 25 million euros.
Liverpool and Marseille are, word has it, getting together just fine talking about Djibril Cissé. Word also has it that a full transfer to Marseille in exchange for nine million euros is to be expected.
Still in the Premiership, Arsenal FC has supposedly offered 9 million euros to AJ Auxerre for the neo-international defender Bakary Sagna, a fine young player who will evolve into one of the best in time for the next World Cup. As much as I’d like him to stay in France for at least another season, he’d fit in well at Emirates, with half the population of France as his teammates.
One of the revelations of last season, Dutch defender Mario Melchiot of Rennes, is set to play with Wigan next season. No monetary terms have yet to reach me, but as you’ll all see more of him in England, watch, ‘cuz he’s good.

I’m pissed that Melchiot left Rennes, a great young team with lots of potential that almost qualified for the CL, to avoid relegation with Wigan and get a fat paycheck.
Sell out.

I wondered where you’d been recently. Welcome back.

I think Melchiott is thinking about his wallet now that he made economic sacrifices for a year to get back a spot on the netherlands team. He lost it when he was in Birmingham. Van Basten recognized his stellar season. But the only thing I’m sad for Rennes for is that they aren’t getting any money from the transfer since he only signed for a year.

God, I know it’s no use melting off at players because they leave for money, it’s like as inveitable as global warming. But arghhhh he was so goooooood……. and now he’s gonna go and get relegated from the premiership… sad.
