Cissé’s tackle on Yepes: Cue “Eye of the Tiger”!

By: Sam | February 6th, 2007

Ask an OM fan about Marseille’s Djibril Cissé’s tackle on Paris’ Mario Yepes: “He didn’t mean it! Come on, he was hurt not too long ago! The ball was right there! He just mistimed it! Come on, he’s just a big teddy bear!”
Ask a PSG fan about Marseille’s Djibril Cissé’s tackle on Paris’ Mario Yepes: “Why, he oughtta be suspended for at least two months, the bastard! Tried to butcher our Mario he did! What a sadistic son-of-a-butcher! God!”

Ask Djibril Cissé himself (Translated from French): I didn’t want to hurt him, I didn’t want him to get an injury. You can see I was playing the ball. … I am not a violent player, nor am I a player who likes to hurt his opponents. In my career, it’s the first time that I hurt an opposing player to this degree, and again I apologize for doing so.

Ask Mario Yepes himself, and you’ll get no answer. Yet.

Ask Bertrand Layec, referee of OM-PSG, who booked Cissé for his tackle (Translated from French): At the time, Cissé’s tackle didn’t seem that bad, because Yepes continued play. … In retrospect, this did not merit a red card, because there was no intent to jeapordize the player’s physical integrity. I assume that Djibril Cissé plays the ball. The contact was heavy, but there was no aggresiveness.

Ask Sammy Traoré, PSG defender (Translated from French): That was a condemnable tackle, and it was unacceptable to speak the way he did (Cissé maintained that Yepes was overtly ungraceful when he went to talk to him. -Sam) There are some words that you just shouldn’t use, and coming from him, it’s a bit stupid. He’s been hurt also, he should know what it’s like.

Ask Sam, blogger for France Offside: It was a reckless tackle and should have merited a sending-off, but there was no intent to really hurt Yepes. There’s no need for a suspension, but since Yepes is going to be out for the rest of the season, it may be inevitable.

Yepes, who suffered a fracture to his left malleol, in the higher region of the ankle, supposedly gave Cissé a one-finger salute and told him to “piss off” when he approached him. Here is the video, it’s the only one i could find. Sorry for the horribleness of it. What do you think?

I was hoping you’d post this. That’s ugly.

anyone remember Frau’s two-month suspension for injuring Noro in a similar fashion?

Watched it again. I’d say the yellow was definitely deserved, possibly a red would have been better. But I agree with you that a suspension seems like overkill.(From what little we can see here — it’s kind of hard to tell exactly where the ball was as he was launching himself.)

I don’t see how Cisse didn’t get a red. That’s a dangerous tackle, leg up, with studs flying through the air. But Ligue 1 referees aren’t exactly reading off the same page as everybody else. That being said, Frau was red carded, Cisse only got a yellow. Could the LFP suspend Cisse even if they wanted to?
