Despite collapse, Gomis is “100% healthy”

Despite the collapse suffered by Bafe Gomis yesterday as a result of this vasovagal condition episode during Wednesday’s practice, Olympique Lyonnais physician Emmanuel Orhant said that the club isn’t worried about Gomis’ physical condition and that the striker is “100% healthy”. In fact, Orhant said that Lyon has been aware of his condition for some time.
Lyon manager Claude Puel said earlier that Gomis has had this condition for some time and that he and his staff wasn’t worried about it. Orhant confirmed this today, saying that the first time Gomis suffered from Vasovagal syncope was 14 years ago. He also suffered an episode while he was in training camp as a 17-year old at St. Etienne, and more recently in a July preseason friendly against Deportivo de la Coruña.
Gomis was checked for this condition in 2002 and again in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Each check lead to the same diagnosis: a vasovagal syncope which leads to a drop in energy, with fainting being a possible result. After these checkups the conclusion was the same, which is no health problem for Gomis.
“I received the report of a dozen cardiologists who I have seen in recent years. The conclusion is the same for every one of them, and there are no cons to the practice of sport,” said Gomis.
Orhant says that the Lyon striker is healthy and that both club and country aren’t worried about his condition. Orhant continued by saying that this condition was caused by stress, similar to stress suffered by a car after years of driving. In addition, Orhant added that Gomis continued to play in the preseason match against Deportivo de la Coruña even after his episode, scoring a goal in the 50th minute.

It did sound like this caused a bit of panic on the pitche yesterday, when he collapsed unconscious despite not being involve in anything like a collision.
Makes me nervous. But I guess if the doctors say it’s okay, it must be. Right?
