France in the Champs League

By: Sam | December 4th, 2006

milanac-lille.jpgThe first round of the greatest club competition in the world wraps up its 2006 edition this week, with three French clubs involved.

Lyon, top of Group E, are guaranteed to see the light of the round of 16, and what’s more, they are guaranteed a first place finish in the group, which will most likely see them face a weaker side in the said round. (Of course, there is always the Barcelona thing…) They face Steaua Bucarest, who are assured a place in the UEFA Cup round of 32.

Bordeaux, third place in Group C behind Liverpool and PSV, have a place in the latter stages of the UEFA Cup all locked up. The other three positions are also untouchable, so Bordeaux’s welcoming of PSV this Tuesday will be purely friendly, in a manner of speech.

Lille’s business in Group G, however, is of the utmost important variety. And the task at hand is no walk in the park either. It’s more of a walk in San Siro stadium where they must get a win and nothing else. A draw would see them to the UEFA Cup playoffs, and a loss could hand them a whole lotta last place if Anderlecht gets their game together and knocks AEK down. Lille fans don’t know who to cheer for in that game.
