Samir Nasri Evokes the Apocalypse, “Could Leave Marseille”

By: Sam | November 3rd, 2007

nasri-lorient.jpgOui, c’est possible que je parte.

Gah.

In an interview with the unfortunately credible French sports newspaperL’Équipe, the 20-year old, who played his first full 90 today since coming down with an injury, confided that a departure from Marseille at the end of this season would be possible. What with there being more prestigious clubs than OM in this world of ours, their putrid start to the season probably hasn’t convinced him any more to stay in the south of France. Neither has their unquellable bureaucratic instability, in all likelihood.

Yes, I may leave, but I have to have a good year. As for the winter transfer window, I don’t think it’s a good idea to leave in the middle of the season, and it’s hard to gel into a new group.

Zing! As of yet, the most over-protective of all over-protective club presidents, Pape Diouf, has not spoken to the media on the matter, but he clearly won’t be long.

Now, this of course propels the debate: Is Nasri ready to make the move to one of the biggest clubs in the world? Inter Milan and Real Madrid, as most sites and newspapers would have it, are the two front-runners in the great race of the Samir.

If one’s answer can be limited to yes or no, it pains me to say that I think he is. At the end of the season he will probably be set.

The boy’s only twenty (that’s only four years older than me!) and he’s an unquestionable starter in one of France’s most prestigious clubs, who are on top of their Champions League group and boast about a dozen internationals from all around the world.

If Marseille progresses to the knockout stages of the Champions League, he’ll be under the most pressure he’ll ever have been under, and he’s already been in Coupe de France finals, various tournaments with the French youth squads as well as gotten his first caps and has heavily impressed.

And as for his actual ability on the pitch, forget about it. Unlike the most players who’ve had the nickname bestowed upon them, they don’t call this kid the next Zizou for nothing. His control both on the ball and on what is going on around him are second-to-none, especially for his age. His spot-on passing have led to many a Marseille goal, and he has been known to pull the odd rabbit out of his hat and score a cracker himself.

So he’s 20. He’ll be 21 when next season starts. It’s young, but it’s been done before. This “oh, he’s too young” excuse isn’t going to last forever.

Please weigh in with your thoughts about if he should stay, where he should go, how much he should cost, or whatever.

    >Oui, c’est possible que je parte.

Wow, my French is good enough to understand that. :-)

And I think he should stay with Marseille for a change. Just imagine where a club like Marseille could be if they hold on to the likes of Ribery and Nasri for a change…

I think another year would probably do him good, but as I can not hide my sheer love for the kid and being the resident Real Madrid writer id have to say this summer there will be alot of attempts to get him. If he is smart he will stay, but then again, moving to Real is not the death of his career, Schuster has placed trust in young players already this season. Inter would be a bad choice because, well its Inter.

    I’ll translate Inara’s link :

“Dear Santa, I have been very good this year, and if you could give me a Benzema, or a Ribery, then I promise to stay next year. Failing that, I’d like a spanish textbook.”

Wow. Ligue 1 needs to find a way to hold onto young players like this. I don’t follow the league that closely, but everyone I know that does is universally amazed by Nasri. He’d be a huge loss to Marseilles and French football.

It’s hard enough as it is for France to keep its players. But impossible if a club is involved in a relegation battle. OM need to get back on track right now.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was an Arsenal player this time next year. What with the strong French connection at Arsenal, and the fact that Nasri is just the type of player Wenger likes.

I think £20million/30 million Euros would be suitable for Nasri. It’s a lot of money, but I’m sure you’d agree, money well spent.

I think EPL fans need to get over the fact that not all talented players want to play in England, even if Arsenal has a “French connection.” Last time I checked, so does Barcelona and omg, so does Marseille!

Nasri has said if his dream is to play for Madrid one day.

Nasri isn’t worth 20-30 million pounds right now. And I strongly doubt he’d go to Arsenal. The name’s hardly ever come up. In my mind Real Madrid is by far the favourite. (And let’s remember I’m a Spurs fan… If he did go to Arsenal I’d probably stick a gun in my mouth.)

And as for that picture, hahaha. French websites are really good at that kind of humor.

On second thought: it wouldn’t be the worst thing if Nasri moves to Madrid. Maybe this would help to keep Schuster’s fingers of Diego. :-)

Problem is… What would Nasri do in Madrid or in London? Boot Sneijder, Guti or Baprista out of his favourite attacking midfielder role? Or edge out Fabregas, Hleb or Rosicky? He’s very talented, but he needs a lot of playing time (this season, he’s been injured and even though he’s been back for 3 games, hasn’t done much)… So I’d be dissapointed to see him go sit on the bench in London or Madrid instead of playing in Marseille…

Honestly, I don’t think Nasri wants to leave Marseille. And I think he will end up extending his contract (though that doesn’t mean he’ll stay necessarily).

But unless Marseille act like they have some goals for the reason that don’t involved getting into a relegation dogfight like PSG did last year, he might have to leave. He has a spot on the NT to think about too. But I think if OM get their act together and can manage to qualify for the UEFA Cup or at least win one of the domestic cups, he will stay.

He’ll extend his contract because that way, when he leaves, Marseille will get the maximum amount of money they can from him (like what Malouda did at Lyon). Not doing so would significantly lessen Nasri’s transfer fee.

It’s no secret and no exaggeration that Nasri is in love with Marseille, both the city and the club. His ego is about 2% of Cissé’s and he’s in no hurry to turn away from OM for a handful of dollars. But we’re kidding ourselves if we think he’ll stay as long as he can. Like I said on my podcast bit, if he stays until Euro 2008 and puts on a good show, he’s gone. But with a hefty tag.

I believe that he is going to play on Real Madrid or Juventus like Zidane because he is his heroe, so choosing one of those teams i would choose Juventus they don’t have a player with the game that nasri has, and if you going to say Del piero(33 years) or Nedved(35 years) please think again, and also in Real Madrid he is going to warm up the bench so i hope that Nasri be very wize on his decision.

erm how wolud it not be possible for a move to lyon or even more likely as roma as i think although he is a good player (obviously) i think teams like real barcelona and chelsea and inter would keep him rooted to the bench until his mid 20’s where as a team like as roma/sevilla/lyon/juve where money is quite plenty full and a garuntee of champs league and a permanent place in the starting 11

    Conor:
He won’t play in ANY other french club than marseille. That’s his town, he’s practically god (hear Zidane) there.
And even if he did, never would he be sold to Lyon.
And don’t be so sure that he would be benched in Real Barca or any other team. He’s going to be the starting midfielder this summer for France. Just look at him grow. He can be a starter virtually anywhere if he deides to leave next year.
As for the money thing, he’s set. Marseille is the second richest club in France and if they really want to keep him, Robert Louis-Dreyfus aka SpongeBOB could give him the Ribery treatment with 500.000 euros a month.
