Paris-SG turns it on, finally, and what’s this about Barthez?

If you’re going to win a game after a long and painful slump, you might as well make it a 4-0 win at home against the leaders of your group, and have it coincidentally take you to the next round of European competition, whereas a draw or a loss would have meant elimination. You know. Or something like that. I suppose.
Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain’s Pauleta and Bonaventure Kalou figured that that plan might be crazy enough to work. Four goals in under 30 minutes, including three in seven, was quite enough to subtely spank the Greeks of Panathinaikos. Paris cracked into second place, a shade better than the last place they were seemingly destined to get. Finishing in front of Hapoel Tel-Aviv on goal average, they will be up against a Champions League reject in the next round. ‘Nuff said.
Also in the UEFA Cup Wednesday, Nancy were denied first place in Group E by a last-minute winner by Australian defender Lucas Neill who scored for Blackburn.
Now, you may have heard from Laurie about Fabien Barthez’s alledged return to pro football. It certainly seems the Divin Chauveis planning his comeback. After horrendous goalkeeper troubles of late, and a position in the table that demonstrates it fairly well, Nantes have had rocky relationships with the young Serb Nenad Stojkovic. Barthez, who was “flattered” that clubs still wanted to have him play, is looking very seriously upon this proposition. Six months, plus 2 years should FCNA remain among the top flight.
