Racism in the Stands Still Alive and Well, League Doesn’t Really Care

By: Sam | September 21st, 2007

followyourleader1.jpgFirst off, here’s a little-known fact for the lot of you. You’re all probably familiar with Pascal Chimbonda, the novelty of France’s World Cup squad and Tottenham defender. He was acquired by Spurs in the summer of last year, after spending a year with Wigan. You’re probably not familiar with the reason why he joined Wigan in the first place. Before his switch to the Prem, he played for two years at Bastia SC in Corsica, who were in Ligue 1 at the time. What pushed him to leave the island was that Bastia fans, a rowdy and proud crowd, insisted on chanting racist bullshit at their best defender, with the oh-so-original monkey shouts and the rest. At their own player, for Christ’s sake.

Well, the Stade Furiani faithful are at it again.

When Bastia travelled to the mainland to take on the lowly Libourne Saint-Seurin, the few travelling fans made a point of performing the Chimbonda expirement on Libourne’s striker Boubacar Kébé. When the Burkina Faso native heard these chants, he did what any non-fucked up person would do, and flipped off the visiting fans (bare minimum). So he got sent off.

And now the league has judged it appopriate to hand him a one-game suspension. No punishment has been handed down to the Nazi scum yet. Of course, there’s gonna be an inquiry on the subject, but who knows what’s going to happen then.

Said Kébé after he heard of his suspension (translated from French): I defended myself. The Bastia supporters’ behaviour was unacceptable, but we’ll let the more competent people take care of that.

My contempt for the Ligue de Football Professionel just grows and grows, I swear.

Fuck racists.

This is one of the more offensive stories I’ve read in awhile.

    *Sigh*

I found this English language BBC news article:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/africa/6998552.stm

It’s always cynical if a player gets punished for defending himself against crowd abuse. While without racist background: Oliver Kahn received a one match ban after TV pictures revealed that he insulted Frankfurt fans in the DFB Cup final after they had abused him all the time.

Though I would give the French FA a fair chance. According to your post and this article they will investigate this case. I hope there is video evidence for the fans abuse available. All national FAs have adopted the FIFA zero tolerance ruling. Ideally Bastia would be punished with a point deduction (3 points for the first time, a couple more if it happened a second time and if it actually happens for a third time: forced relegation).

Props to Kebe for _only_ flicking off the crowd. I might have done a lot worse.

In So Foot (http://www.sofoot.com/article-101477-kebe-en-rouge-et-noir-sofoot.html), they give a little more information : Kébé was sent off with the following explanation by the referee in his post-match report ” Kebe a été expulsé pour cause d’insultes raciales envers les supporters bastiais ” for the non french : ” Kebe was sent off for having racially insulted bastia supporters ” .

The FFF… Are truly walking on their head.

what the fuck is up with racist chants towards africans in europe. europeans always bash americans for everything but if that kind of shit happened at a basketball or american football game there would be riots in every major city and a huge uproar. NO ONE makes racist chants towards african american players in the NBA or NFL. I always thought europeans were educated and socialist minded but all I ever
hear is about the racism in soccer, in every country too.

“Kebe was sent off for having racially insulted bastia supporters.”

    Unbelievable.

I love the “follow your leader” pic.

This is really disgusting. I thought this was more of a problem in Spain, Italy and eastern Europe. Guess not.

The thing that makes me sick to my stomach is that French media are talking about how they’re ashamed when the Frenc National Anthem is booed in Italy and how nazi signs were seen in Milan. They made a big deal when Lithuanians or slovens fans put a banner that said “Welcome to Europe” to the predominantly black team. But they forget that in some stadiums (Nice, Bastia , Ajaccio, Paris and some others), onkey signs are alive and well.
Now you have canal Plus negociaating with some clubs to not hear them and to not show them but if you go to a stadium like the Parc des Princes, that’s the first thing you will notice.

Anyway, people in corsica are not really an example of french fans. French Football grounds by the Italian frontier always have racism problems.
The leagues need to be very strict from now on…

Well the United States is racist, but sometimes it isn’t overt.

US isn’t racist, France isn’t racist, but both countries host some really stupid people, like any other country i think.. Now the intersting thing is how the problem is dealt with.. And i sincerely hope LFP and FFF will do something.
