Matchday 16 - Lyon roars still
By: Sam | December 3rd, 2006Le Mans hosted Lyon in the inaugral match of the weekend, and wouldn’t you know it, Lyon walked away with a yawn-tastic 1-0 win. Le Mans keeper Johan Pelé was the reason why the game didn’t end up like the 5-0 variety. But he could do nothing against Sylvain Wiltord’s close-range header in the second half, and Lyon are still 14 points in front of second place Lens.
Speaking of which, the latter team had themselves a not bad result, humiliating UEFA Cup-bound Bordeaux at home. Hilton, Cousin and Jemaa provided the goals. Lens has 29 points, and they are in second place on goal average, in front of Lille and Sochaux.
Monaco, seemingly rid of their early-season slump, smugly trounced Valenciennes at home by the score of 3-0. Touré and Gakpé got the first two at either side of half-time, and the giant underachiever Koller nabbed his second of the season fifteen minutes later. An almost flawless performances by the Principality’s team, who are now in 16th place, and moving up fast.
Sunday, in Sochaux, Marseille came into town looking for a second win in a row. Sorry. Although dominating the match beginning till end, Marseille just couldn’t finish, and it was the hosts that did. Afolabi placed a great header on Zairi’s free kick to continue Sochaux’s surprising first half of the season.
Another battle at the top on Sunday was Nancy welcoming Lille. The hosts coming off an eventful but happy UEFA Cup match this week, got things rolling a few minutes after half-time, with Gavanon striking a decent shot that was deflected into Sylva’s net. Ten minutes later, Bodmer took a nice feed from Youla and tied the score. Five minutes after that, Debuchy put the Dogues in front with a clinically-placed shot in the bottom corner. Youla then ended all hope in the last minute, propulsing Lille into third place.
Other scores: Auxerre 0-0 Nice; Rennes 2-0 Nantes; Saint-Etienne 2-0 Lorient; Sedan 1-2 Troyes; Paris SG - Toulouse (postponed)
